Casual Commander League

Achievement-Focused Commander

At Checkmate, our goal is to create a fun and inclusive environment for players of all experience levels. That’s why we’ve designed this league to emphasize achievement over competition, ensuring everyone can enjoy the game while challenging themselves.

When

The league is open play from 6pm-10pm each Friday except for Prerelease weekends and special events. You may arrive and leave when you wish, though seating is on a first-come first-serve basis. Play in as many or as few games as you like in that time frame! You are not obligated to come to every Commander night in the season.

Cost

You get a complimentary registration each season with the purchase of a Pre-Constructed deck. Otherwise, the cost is $10 for the entire season. If you register for the next season, you will be retroactively registered for the last two weeks of the current season.

Rules and Banlist

We will be following the recommended Ban List from the Commander Rules Committee. We stress the importance of Rule 0: discuss with the other players in your pod about the preferred power level and play style that you would like to be a part of. You are welcome to change pods through the night if you have a difference of preferences.

How It Works

Throughout the night, you’ll have opportunities to earn points in your 3-5 player pod:

Evergreen Objectives - These can be completed at any time during the event.

Round Objectives - For each game, 8 additional achievements are introduced randomly. These expire at the end of the game and are replaced by a fresh set of 8 for the next game.

Points are awarded for being the first in your pod to achieve an objective, as well as earning 1 point per win each night.

End-of-Season Rewards

At the end of each season, these points will be used to determine your overall ranking among all the Magic players at Checkmate across all of our seasonal events. High ranking players will receive awards that are specific to each season. Afterwards, your accumulated points are added to your Checkmate “Points Vault.” These points are permanently held in your vault and can be redeemed for exclusive promo materials or store merchandise. For more details, check out our “Prize Wall” list.
